| WORKSHOP: Adhesion and Bonding of Automotive Plastics |
| Instructors: Prof. Mike Chung, Penn State University; Prof. H.-J. Sue, Texas A&M University |
|
The workshop will convey important fundamental concepts and approaches to functionalize, characterize and evaluate adhesion and
adhesive properties of PP and TPO based substrates. Novel approaches for achieving good functionalization of PP and TPO surfaces
will be presented. Fracture mechanics based methodology will be employed to evaluate adhesive strength of bonded PP and TPO substrates.
Outline of workshop by topics:
- Background and Introduction
- Review of Relevant Material Issues
- Functionalization of PP and TPO Surfaces
- direct copolymerization of -olefin and functional monomers
- functionalization approach via post-polymerization
- reactive polyolefin approach
- grafting reaction of functional polymer chains
- Characterization
- surface energy
- surface functionality/composition
- surface morphology
- Test Methodology
- T-peel
- lap-shear
- side-impact
- fracture mechanics approach
- Examples and Show-and-Tell
